White Island volcano: six bodies recovered in military operation

Helicopters set off from New Zealand mainland despite serious risk of volcano erupting again

A military operation to retrieve eight bodies from the White Island volcano in New Zealand has been mostly successful, with the military retrieving six by lunchtime on Friday.

Deputy police commissioner Wally Haumaha told the families six bodies had been located and were being taken to the mainland, after a military extraction operation that took several hours went largely to plan.
